Happy Earth Day

Too bad we are messing the place up badly. See this story on a floating pile of trash in the pacific, TWICE the size of TEXAS. It’s mostly made up of plastics, which do not biodegrade, they apparently photodegrade. What this means, is that the object breaks into smaller and smaller pieces, but does not break down into it’s base components.  Here is another good article by one of my favourite columnists on this seemingly unknown Plastic Atlantis, risen from our ignorance and disrespect of our environment. Here are some interesting facts, about how long our trash will last.

Left out in the open elements somewhere, a banana would last around three weeks.
A piece of newspaper would last about a month.
A cotton rag would last around 5 months.
A wool sock would last approx 1 year.
A tin can can last up to 100 years.
An aluminum can is able to stick around for up to 400 or 500 years.
And… Styrofoams and plastics, can last for Millions of years. A styrofoam cup, may never degrade at all.

Happy Earth day. Enjoy it while it lasts.
